GEOCACHING
A Day on the Mountain
Idea #1
If you have a rocky area (near water, if possible) available, purchase an inexpensive toy salamander, place the cache container in the mouth of the salamander, and place the salamander on the rocks.
After reading the book, give the children hints that will help them get an idea of what they are looking for. Examples are:
- This amphibian needs to live near streams, ponds, or lakes.
- This amphibian lays eggs in the water.
- After hatching, this amphibian’s babies (larvae) breathe with gills and swim until they develop lungs for breathing air and move onto land.
Idea #2
Purchase an inexpensive plastic owl. Drill or punch a small hole in its beak, just big enough for fishing line to go through. Tie the fishing line to the owl’s beak and to a small cache container. If you want to be more creative, cover the cache container with items resembling hair, feathers, etc. to camouflage the container. Place the owl in a low branch of a tree and allow the cache container to hang from the owl’s mouth to look like it is coughing up a pellet (as described in the book). If the branches are too high for the children to reach, consider rigging a rope/pulley system for them to lower the owl.
After reading the book, give the children the coordinates to find the cache. If you do not have a GPS for the children to use, give them hints to follow to find the cache.
Examples are:
1. These animals can hunt and capture food under snow using their sharp hearing.
2. These animals throw up pellets of undigested food consisting of animal bones and fur.
